Volcano earthquake report for Monday, 1 Jul 2019

The effects of the earthquake could also be seen in Catania itself. Cornices, sculptures, plaster, some brick – they dropped onto the streets. In the end it is an old and quite neglected city.

Zafferana Etnea administratively covers a large fragment of Mount Etna, with the del Bove valley to the top craters. The journey from one of the few buses took an hour with a piece (about 25km).

From Catania it was snowing with rain, which quickly melted at these heights. My destination was at an altitude of 500-600m above sea level. The town is small, has a few monuments. The square, at the end of which has a beautiful view of the Ionian Sea.

Dab was monstrous. About zero degrees, wind, every moment a snowstorm. Zafferan himself was not affected by the significance, but the neighboring villages did indeed – especially Fleri. A few-kilometer walk was waiting for me.

On December 26, 2018, an earthquake of 4.8 on the Richter scale took place , the epicenter was close to Catania. Seemingly minor, but serious damage. I survived ten earthquakes, including Chile with a strength of over 7 degrees, there was practically no damage then.

Here, old buildings, its inadequate current maintenance, built objects insufficiently protected against shocks – have been seriously damaged. Many people have been left homeless. Some were slightly wounded. Another thing is that the epicenter had its place just below the surface.

Two days earlier there was a violent eruption of Etna. This phenomenon was related to the subduction of tectonic plates off the coast of Sicily – African and Eurasian. And the earthquake itself with Etna’s eruption. Its existence is related to the movements of discs. Now take a look at how these features of earthquakes global incident map.

Incidentally, they had almost the same jackets as me. Both of them did not enter the closed area. But when I showed up and with a large camera passed the police car, no one stopped me.
